Final Reflection

I feel that this project has been a good experience and that I have learnt a lot, especially from the mistakes we have made throughout. I haven't really had the chance before, to work like this, without any guidance from teachers. As a whole we have worked well, but there are a lot of things that I need to take in to account in the future to improve on. We needed to listen to each other a lot more, which would have meant having a daily meeting at the beginning of each day so we knew who was doing what, when. I think that we would have also benefited from swapping roles on each episode so that we had a different director and editing team. I think that a lot of our problems came from people being over-powered and not being able to get their thoughts across to the rest of the production team.
Our series has a lot of bad points and good points but I think that if I had planned a lot better at the beginning and got everyone's input, then they would have gone a lot better. Two out of three of our episodes were not aired on the set deadlines and in the real media industry this would have not be acceptable and we would have lost the job. I think that a lot of us needed to take the project a lot more seriously so that we would try get everything done, in any way we thought possible. Instead of this, things were just done when we thought it would be able to, I think that we could have tried a lot harder to make deadlines.
Deadlines were mainly unmet because of not getting the shoot finished in enough time and I think this was all down to planning. Our female actress was only able to shoot on Thursdays and as we knew this from the beginning, we then should have found a different actress who could shoot on more days or just not have a female character. As for the rest of the cast, they were all members of our class and they could pretty much shoot when ever we were free. If we had researched our actors/actress to start of with, we would have been able to get a lot more shooting time and therefore met all deadlines efficiently.

I think that the idea of showing our work online was a really good idea and it lets the whole world see what we have created. I decided which social networking sites that we wanted to use and we needed to display all of our videos on YouTube and Vimeo. Our chosen social networking site was Facebook, as it is very popular and it would be really easy for us to get a lot of fans and a lot of views. This was another step for us, as normally we would just upload our videos to the diploma's YouTube site and not a lot of people outside of Long Road would get to see it. However, this way we could get a lot of feedback, get a lot of people interested and it was amazing that so many people agreed to be fans of it.
I think that this has also had a down side, as there a lot of others doing the same thing all over the internet, we weren't really being original and there wasn't really a way of us standing out from the crowd. I think that if we had a bigger budget so we could make out own website, that may have helped to widen our audience and popularity but it still isn't enough. The world we now live in today, allows anyone, anywhere to show any pieces of their work pretty much anywhere. This means that you have to create something out of the ordinary, something of great quality or you have to know the right people. It isn't as easy anymore to get into the industry with a simple piece of work that you have created.

At the beginning of the project we researched a few other webseries and analyzed them. I think that in terms of webseries, our storyline is quite original and I haven't yet found something similar. A lot of the webseries, such as 'The Guild' focus their audience to teens and young adults and use them within in their series. This where we are similar because we thought that this would be the easier audience to target because we know what they would be interested in. This is also made the comedy a lot easier, as we know what kinda of comedy is humorous to our age range. 'The Guild' seems to focus on a certain stereotype in our age group, which we would call 'computer nerds', as their series is about an online game.

I have decided to random select one of their episodes and try to compare it with one of our episodes. I think that this could help us to see some faults and see how we would have improved, if were to have made another episode.
I have decided to watch Season 3 - Episode 1:Expansion Time. Below is the episode. . .

<a href="http://video.msn.com/?mkt=en-us&fg=Xbox_Channel_guild_player_final&vid=6f31eb66-4360-439a-ad62-f2bdf28f550e" target="_new" title="Season 3 - Episode 1: Expansion Time">Video: Season 3 - Episode 1: Expansion Time</a>

This episode is slightly different to all of the others that I have seen of theirs. Most of their other episodes are mainly of each of the character on their computers, in their virtual world. However, in this episode, they are shown lining up outside a store waiting for it to open so that they can buy the latest version of their game. This was a good twist from the normal episodes and it made it a lot more interesting to them just being sat in front of the camera the whole time. We decide to use this idea for our first episode, in a smaller scale, as we used a flash back to one of the characters getting injured. Most people thought this was the best part of the first episode as it was the most entertaining part. I think that we could have got away with putting a flash back in each episode to make it more interesting.
Their website is the image similar to the one I had in my head for our series. I think that we would have benefited from making something similar to that. Produce t-shirts that others can buy, our videos down the side in a toolbar and the most recent video being displayed as the first thing you see and also links to all the sites that we use. Their website is a brilliant way to promote their series and I think that has really contributed to getting them popular.

The internet has helped a lot of people get heard by others and allowed them to be creative in the way they want to. It is has opened a lot of windows to everyone and a world of possibilities. There aren't many people in the world now who do not have access to a computer or the internet and this helped a lot of people.

When looking at creative practitioners, you hardly see any that have become popular by producing their work on the internet. Most of the practitioners that we inspire to be, have been in the industry a long time and worked their way in from the bottom and got to the top. Not many can say that they have done that by just getting big number of hits on YouTube. Yes, they may be popular to some parts of the world but there isn't much prophet that comes from it. Popularity on the internet is more for creative work that is made for a hobby or in spare time. The prophet on the internet is low now, as people can do pretty much anything and it isn't a bad thing if that is what you are looking for.
In our case, it was really useful, we have learnt a lot from the experience and it has shown us a lot we can improve in the future. We should use the internet to stream our work cause there is always someone out there who is interested and it will help us to improve our next piece of work. We can get feedback almost instantly, a large number of views in minutes and we can change our episodes according to this. We are able to change our next episode, in response to how our audience reacts to the previous episode. This method of showing our work, in some ways, is much great in getting popular responses than say a tv show that they would have made over a long period of time and then aired after.
As for our team work, we have learnt a lot there too and it will help us when we are in the industry, how we should work with people to get a job done efficiently. Knowing how to work in a group so that deadlines are met is very important and we know what is needed to make a production work. I think that it is a lot easier to get an online series working and we have only had a smaller taster of what it would actually be like.

Model Release Forms for the Project

Interview with our Producer

I decided that it would be a good idea to interview our producer, Nick, about what he thought of the series that we have produced. James interviewed him and below are the questions and the answers.

Are you happy with the three episodes of the webseries we made for you?

"I am happy with the improved quality through the three series but I am very disappointed by the lack of keeping to deadlines. This would have caused a number of serious issues were this a commercial brief. The episodes were too long as well. The third episode was the right length."

After interviewing members of the audience, they said that they liked the second episodes length which was 4.30. They said that episode 3 was too short. What are your thoughts on that?

"I'm glad that the audience responded well to the length but I still believe that it could have been shorter. On television there's a specific slot for a series. If the slot was 30 minutes, the episode couldn't have been any longer. I suppose online it's different because you don't have the specific time gaps."

Do you like the idea of the series, the fact that it's in a detention room?

"I think the concept is very strong and I have been very excited by the idea from the beginning. I feel the first episode did not do justice to the concept but the last episode has a much stronger appeal."

What didn't you like about the series?

"The bad language and needless aggression in the first episode. I liked the fact that you changed the offensive language into more inventive expressions of rage for the other episodes."

What did you like about the series?

"The title sequence is very good, both in terms of genre conventions and technical ability. The whip cutting was very effective. I enjoyed the more surreal elements of the third episode as well."

What did you think of the characters, and the acting?

"I thought Matt Hornby's performance and character consistently amusing. The other acting improved over time."

We missed deadlines and the lengths of the episodes you weren't happy with either, but what could we have done better?

"Communicated better and looked out for each other more to ensure everything was completed to time and to a high enough standard."

If we made a fourth episode, what would you like us to include, and how would you like us to go about it?

"Continue in the slightly surreal, mighty-boosh like direction you have begun to take."

Focus Group of Viewers - Answers

What are you initial thoughts and feelings of the webseries?

"It was comedy, and it was one of those things that you could watch again because its not bad bad, but its kind of bad good. Like it knows its bad but it makes it good. Like with the editing and stuff."

"They developed, the characters, as it went on. I thought the 2nd episode was better than the 1st. and the 3rd one. There was a lot more comedy, and action to it."

"I think the girl should have been in it more because she was just there and she didn't really do anything."

"I think the first one focused more on development of the characters. Just introducing them separately and then the 2nd one had a story base. then the third one is just kind of random. It was just trippy and getting high for no apparent reason. until the end."

What do you think of the characters and their interactions?

"Josh's character, it might have been the shot type, but it just felt like he had been pasted in there."

"I really liked Keiths character, but the characters, I didn't really like the girls character but thats because she didn't really do much. My favourite characters keith and I liked sonny, and Pier. They're probably joint 2nd."

"You had a range of characters, and they weren't the same or anything which was good."

"and they were really different which was good."

Do you prefer the first second or third episode and why is that?

"The second one because it didn't have all the hassle of the first one. The third one was just abit confusing."

Do you think it worked though?

"I think the effect was to confuse the audience which worked but it was just a bit weird, and random, in terms of storyline."

So did you prefer the 2nd one?

"I prefered the 2nd one but I got what was happening in the 3rd one."

"I prefered the 2nd one. I think the thrid one was too short."

Was the episode structure for the 2nd and third episodes better than the 1st?

"It flowed better than the first one."

What do you think of the fan page on facebook?

"I havent seen a lot of it so far but from what I have seen I think it's good. I like the idea of posting things from the characters perspectives."

'I like the fan page, its quite simple but effective. It does keep it interesting, like you said about the characters posting things. Just keeps the background story going for the webseries."

The target audience was people our age. 16-21. do you think facebook is a good place for a fan page?

'Yes definatly."

Do you all have facebook?

"Yes"

What do you think could be improved for the next episode if we made one?

"Development of the second."

"I think you should cut out the swearing because it just like a beep a minute. I know it was just in the first one but it was just like beep after beep."

"I'd quite like the same setting as the second one. Different storyline, different character."

"Maybe have one or two main characters and then rotate the other characters around. So you get to see the old characters, like the audience favourites, and then you get to see their new reactions with the new characters."

What are the good and bad points of the episodes?

"It was too long, and too much swearing. Good points was that it managed to establish a good base for the episode to start on. It wasn't too tiresome that you couldn't watch it again."

"I think the first one introduced the characters well. Too much swearing though, it was just beep beep beep."

"I think you focus the humour too much on Keith going crazy at the beginning. Apart from the frijj bit which was really funny. Good word play. There the two funny bits, you need to stretch the comedy out."

What about the second one?

"I really liked the second one. It was funny, it had a good story."

" I liked it too, and through out all three of the episodes the characters managed to stay the same which was good. Sometimes in television series the characters change. Their nice one time and then they're really horrible but your characters didn't change."

" Only bad point was when you looked at the camera and when the teachers at the door. But everytime I see that it makes me laugh."

What about the third one then?

"It was too short, I got the idea you were trying to create an element of confusion but it kind of gave it away a bit with the title so maybe something a little bit more cryptic could have worked better."

"I didn't like the teachers acting. She was smiling too much about the fact that theres been a gas leak."

Who is your favourite character?

"I'd have to say sonny, your character. It just made me laugh the way he kept hitting people. It was just one of those things I found hilarious."

"Little things please little minds."

"I just really liked your reactions."

"I liked Keith."

"I liked the one who kept trying to escape. Pier."

Did you think the acting was good?

"I think the acting was good for all the characters."

What did you think of vince as a character?

"It felt as if he was just stuck on there to fill screen time because he kind of just sat there and said something every now and then."

"I think hes one of those characters that doesn't really do or say much but hes a part of it. Make the whole thing whole."

What makes the webseries watchable?

"Humour, slapstick humour. Nonsense. Silly."

"The comedic stuff, and the way it was random, but good random."

"It was just really funny."

Focus Group of Viewers

Today we gathered together four random students from Long Road so that we could get together some outside feedback from other viewers. We decided that we would show them all each of the episodes that we produced and then we would ask them a series of questions about the online series that we have produced. Here are the questions that we decided to ask them.

1) What are your initial thoughts and feelings on the webseries?

2) What do you think of the characters and their interactions?

3) Do you prefer the 1st, 2nd or 3rd episode? and why is that?

4) Was changing the episode structure for the 2nd and 3rd episodes a good idea? was it better than the 1st episode?

5) Do you think the episode lengths are suitable for a webseries?

6) What do you think of the fan page? is facebook a suitable place for the fan page?

7) What do you think could be improved for the next episode if we made one?

8) What are the good and bad points of each episode?

9) Who is your favourite character?

10) What makes this webseries watchable?

We chose James to ask all the questions and then myself and Alex controlled two camera's that we were set up on either side of the room. Shooting it went really well, it looked really good from camera view but we did not use headphones so I am not too sure if the sound quality will be that good.

Episode Three

Here is the video for episode three of Detention Deficit.

Episode Three - Script

Here is the script that James wrote for episode three.

"pier: why are you always getting at me? your always around me. where is the pen? vince! (pause) your always, like getting at me. i just cant stand it, the one time..

sonny: (interrupts) well think of a desent plan then and i'll stop getting at you.

pier: i just cant think of a plan, like, what the hell. (looks at keith)

sonny: you are such a vegetarian

shot of keith looking really 'out of it'. sonny and pier stare at him unable to figure out whats up with him. vince goes to see if he's okay.

vince: what seems to be the matter keith?

keith: i have eaten a rare amasoneon coffee bean. (sticks head up while talking and then continues looking around the room)

vince: aah, i see where you're going

shot of vince is from keiths perspective. everythings colourful and morphing.

sonny: what are you two talking about?

pier: yea, what are you two talking about?

vince and keith are talking in gibberish and sonny and pier can't make out what their saying.

sonny: am i missing something here?

pier and sonny look confused at eachother and then continue looking at vince and keith. damien walks through the door

damien: alright guys

keith: aah, cheif. (rubs face paint on his face to look like a red indian. the face paint magically appears with no explanation of why its there) get this spirit out of me

the next shot is of damien but he looks like cheif from 'one flew over the kookoos nest'

fade out

the next scene is where everyone is forming a vitual around keith. keith is lying on the table in the middle of the class chanting something. damien transorms into cheif again. pier is sitting on a table with sonny lying on him.

pier: sonny, do you remember the other day, when, when we were locked in the classroom and i tried to get out the door. and you.

sonny: i smashed your head, i smashed your head

pier: you smashed my head

sonny and pier laugh histerically

next scene everyone is dancing round keith like it's an actual ritual. all the characters have changed their appearance slightly. clothes torn and swapping clothes etc.

after a while a teacher walks in the door looking worried

teacher: oh my god, are you alright, i can't believe you're still alive.

everyone stops dancing and everyone looks normal again though their appearance is the same. basically, they look a mess.

teacher: there's been a massive gas leak

everyone collapses due to the gas they've been breathing in.

fade out"
